About the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 2005 with an intake of 60 seats and it was increased to 120 in the year 2009. Further, the intake was increased to 180 and M.E Thermal Engineering was started in the year 2014. The department is also having a recognized research center for students to carry out Ph.D in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
The department is known for having many publications, research papers, patents, and consultancy work. In the year 2015, the department received a DST-SEED fund amount of Rupees 17.8 Lakhs to carry out the “Cold Storage Project” which was completed in 2017. In the year 2017, the department also received a DST-MES fund amount of Rupees 45 Lakhs to carry out the “Energy Transfer Project” which will get completed in March 2021. In the year 2017, ISTE fund was sanctioned for our students to complete their final year project.
At Sastha, we are providing real-time training to our students by conducting workshops and seminars in our college premises and by taking them for industrial visits. The department has made internships compulsory to fulfill the gap between educational institutes and industries in order to increase the chances of employability.
Our students are getting trained using internships along with value-added courses such as Solid Works, Creo software,3D Printing and placed with leading industries such as Robert Bosch, Renault Nissan, Daimler India, TVS Sundaram fasteners, TI Metals, Flextronics, Value Ingredients, Endurance Technology, Ucal Fuel Systems, ESSAR steel, Toshiba machine Tools.
In the year 2021, Mechanical Engineering Department was diversified into Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich Course) and Mechanical and Automation Engineering.
B.E-Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich):
Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich) is one of the major courses that bring subject knowledge along with the technical skills by attending the Industrial Training or Implant Training by the students. Sandwich course will give a thorough experience and key skills required by the industry which will make the students to work in the industry directly. Recruiters will give more importance to Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich) students at the time of recruitment. Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich) students have the advantage of being able to work in the industry from day one without any additional training.
B.E-Mechanical and Automation Engineering
Mechanical and Automation Engineering is an advancement of mechanical engineering program that focuses mainly on designing and manufacturing of products and machines by using CAD/CAM/CAE and automation systems. The course was introduced by taking into consideration, the future of automation which helps in minimizing time, material, manpower and increases the accuracy and precision. Mechanical and Automation engineers mainly focus on designing and manufacturing of machines.

Teaching Learning Process
A continuous improvement approach of teaching and learning engages the learners with key processes, modes of discussions and narratives of subjects in order to understand what constitutes quality and standards in particular domains. Several measures are adopted to acknowledge the importance of academic attainment. The major areas which enabled the improvement of quality teaching and learning involves adherence to academic calendar, pedagogical content knowledge, collaborative learning, quality of laboratory experience.
Bright students are encouraged with Rs.5000/- cash award and a certificate of merit, if he/she maintains 90% attendance and secures high marks in the university exams. Also, 10% of the student toppers, from each year, based on the university exam marks are awarded every academic year.
If a student receives the award continuously from first year to final year, a special cash award of Rs.10, 000/- and a certificate of merit is given at the end of the course. Anna University rank holders are awarded with a cash prize of Rs.1000/- each.
All the students are constantly motivated by the faculty members.
Activities are provided to structure the intellectual, social and emotional support to help the slow learners to move forward in their learning by conducting coaching classes after working hours. This is conducted in two groups, students having below 3 arrears and the other students having above 3 arrears. An individual faculty member is assigned to take care of these students. Counseling sessions are held to identify their difficulties and to help them build their confidence. Retest and home test are given to improve the academic performance. The slow learners are identified based on their performance in the university examinations and they are given special attention by allotting them in separate classes. The students are then provided with adequate coaching to overcome difficulties and perform better in exams.
Active learners are encouraged by conducting extra technical development courses through Microelectronics club by the industrial experts, providing awareness and leading them to participate in internship programs, inviting project proposal, paper presentation and help them take up roles of coordinator , organizer, committee head and volunteers in national level technical symposium , workshops and hands-on training. The bright students are given special industry based training during vacations and beyond working hours by the industry experts. With the help of the faculty members, the bright students are motivated to solve aptitude questions and are also encouraged to take part in group discussion activities beyond working hours. College provides funds for the selected teams to do innovative projects. These are the steps taken by the department in improving the quality of teaching & learning experience of students.
